Many see becoming an entrepreneur as a step towards financial independence and freedom. However, some people figure that out a little late in life. Maybe it’s because their job doesn’t give them the benefits they need or the freedom they want. Whatever the cause, they discovered that their path lies in entrepreneurship after years of being an employee.
However, coming to that conclusion flies in the face of their experience. So it’s a paradigm shift that needs a little push to happen; indeed, if you’re unsure whether to take that leap, think about these things.
Your Job is No Longer Relevant
Please take a look at who’s doing your job now and who used to be doing it. How much of your work is being sent off to different people? Think about newspapers. While they exist, an equal if not more significant number of work goes towards online media rather than print, and not everyone made it through that change. Consider your line of work and whether it will remain relevant in the next five years.
Jobs no Longer Provide Financial Security.
Once, people could work the same 9-to-5 jobs and expect to have something by retirement, or even just a job for a long enough time. That’s no longer true, or it’s a truth disproven by the recent financial crisis. People are recovering, but it can happen again.
Due to several factors, including rapid technological advancement and the volatile state of economics, companies have become “flexible.” Permanent staff is not as familiar as it used to be, allowing companies to trim the fat should another crisis arise. As an entrepreneur, you’ll have your job security in your hands.
Innovation Comes at a Faster Rate
The world is changing. While robots and computers are far from eliminating the necessity of human workers, the fact is that many jobs have been made obsolete by their development and innovation. Both blue and white-collar workers have found themselves on the street after one innovation too many. Depending on the nature of your job, you may be next.
A Business is Easier to Put Up
The good news is that setting up businesses is surprisingly easy with technological innovation. While it’s not a walk in the park, it’s far more accessible than it used to be. Physical stores or offices are no longer required, making them more accessible in a financial sense. While there is still financial risk involved, the stakes are more manageable and easy to mitigate with a few months’ worths of savings.
You Have Years of Experience Under Your Belt
Younger entrepreneurs may be the poster boys for start-up success, but your years of experience and knowledge give you a massive advantage. You’re better positioned to create a start-up than a fresh graduate if you’ve kept up on your industry news. As a result, you won’t make the same mistakes, and you’ll be able to spot trends as they begin.
Capital is Easier for You
Being gainfully employed has its benefits for the potential entrepreneur. Having a consistent income stream for years looks good to a bank that’ll be more willing to give you a loan. If you’ve made a name for yourself as an authority in your field, you could even look to crowd-funding to find the resources you need.
Retirement Might Not Be for You
Some people look at their golden years as the time they’ll be spending sitting on the deck, sipping their favorite drink, doing absolutely nothing. While that’s a nice thought, the reality is that you may be bored out of your mind. So you’ll want to do something productive on your time, and having a company is as reasonable and productive an effort as any.
“Retirement age” is just a term. You shouldn’t need to stop using your experience and knowledge because you’ve hit a certain age. If you want to keep contributing, do it by starting your own company.
For the most part and in select industries, age means little to nothing. You can become an entrepreneur and start a company if you’ve got a good idea, a good pitch, and the will to follow through. It’s not for everyone, but you should give it a shot if it’s for you.
